If you need long-term care—whether in your own home, in sheltered housing or in a residential nursing home—we’ll make sure you get the help that you’re entitled to.
We’ll give you free advice, by telephone or email, and be your advocate so that you receive the help you need from your local Social Services agency.
You can find out more about your entitlements by visiting the following websites:
Once you contact our advice and advocacy service, you’ll receive more information about
organisations that may be of help.
There is also the possibility that, once your social services entitlements have been explored, you can receive additional assistance from us for long-term care.
Because we believe you should have a choice in how and where you receive long-term care, we offer assistance with the cost of care in a private home of your choice or in your own home.
Residential and nursing care
Help with paying your fees at a private facility
If you prefer long-term care in a private care home of your choice in order to be close to your family and friends, we’ll guide you to those care homes that have a strong RAF connection (PDF 76KB). We’ll also make sure that you understand how much of your fees are available for funding from your local authority.
Care homes with places for members of the RAF family
Though we no longer provide long-term care to new residents in our care facility, we do maintain close ties with a number of care homes that let us reserve space for people of our choice (PDF 12KB).
If you are having difficulty finding a place in a care home, we may be able to nominate your for one our reserved places. Generally, these facilities have waiting lists for future residents but they tend to be shorter than at other facilities.
If you are nominated for one of our reserved places, you will be responsible for paying the care home fees. However, like residents in other care homes, you may be eligible to receive funds from us to top-up your fees.
Retirement housing
You may not need long-term residential or nursing care just yet but would like an option that provides you peace-of-mind. Retirement housing, sometimes known as sheltered housing (PDF 200KB), could be the right solution for you.
Though we do not provide assistance with the cost of retirement housing, we can provide you with the names of organisations that can be of help. Please contact our advice and advocacy team for details. There are a number of organisations providing retirement homes and sheltered housing to ex-Service personnel.
Care in your own home
If you decide to stay in your own home (PDF 200KB), your local authority will assess your care needs and determine whether they can offer you help with the cost of the care you or your loved one is receiving at home.
If your local authority is already helping with the cost of care, we may be able to offer additional assistance if you are not receiving the full cost of your care.
Also, we can help pay for welfare breaks away from home for you or your carer to help relieve the pressures that care-givers often experience.
In addition to offering welfare breaks at our own care home, Princess Marina House, we have connections to a number of other care homes that specialise in welfare breaks for ex-Service personnel.
