Volume of Work
Welfare work carried out by the Fund is vast but in general terms can be sub-divided into four areas, General Needs; Housing; Care Services and Education.
For those requiring urgent assistance, help can be almost instantaneous. Independent committees, staffed by volunteers, sit weekly to consider upward of 120 applications for Fund assistance at each meeting. Sympathetic and careful consideration is given to each case and committee sittings sometimes last for many hours. As those who served during the Second World War and shortly afterwards either in the RAF or its associated forces - including National Service in the RAF - reach old age, they are more likely to need their Fund's help. Add to this an increasing need from those currently leaving the Service, many on medical discharge, and it becomes clear that welfare spending will continue to rise year on year. The RAFBF is determined to reach out to as many of the RAF Family in need or distress as it can - either directly or through other charities. There is no ceiling put on the amount we are willing to spend on welfare - even at a time when our income may be decreasing.
