Louise Copeland - RAF Driver
"Returning from a tour, my van was involved in an accident which left me in a coma with serious brain injuries. Not only have the RAF Benevolent Fund bought me a flat to live in - they helped with my rehabilitation too. I'm getting my life back on track with their help."
Louise joined the RAF in 1999 aged 18. In 2004, on her return from a tour of duty, she was involved in a road traffic accident, which left her in a coma. She suffered a fractured skull, neck injuries and brain damage. After two months, Louise gradually regained consciousness, but she was left with severe cognitive difficulties, impaired vision and reduced motor skills.
Louise made startling progress in her initial rehabilitation, but living with her parents was far from ideal. The stresses and strains of relearning the life skills that many people take for granted was exacerbated by the lack of independence she felt.
So Louise’s Warrant Officer referred her to the RAF Benevolent Fund. We not only purchased a flat for Louise, but also provided her with a grant for further rehabilitation.
“The RAFBF has been exceptionally helpful,” said Louise. “This flat was the first step in getting my life back on track and it’s snowballed from there. It feels like a miracle.”
