Childcare Centres

In May 2000 Trustees approved a major welfare initiative to fund Childcare Centres on all major RAF Stations, in recognition of the changed nature of RAF service.

Child Care Centres

The heavy burden of operational detachments leads to financial strain on families where a partner with children is not in a position to secure or retain employment. Construction of the first of these Childcare Centres began in 2001.

This highly successful initiative is now coming to a close. 2004 saw the completion of centres at Aldergrove, Valley, Halton, Brampton/Wyton and Honington. Projects at Cranwell/Digby and Henlow were also approved with a total in year spend of nearly £2.5M. Twenty-six Childcare Centres have now been funded across the Royal Air Force and only RAF Brize Norton and RAF Akrotiri remain to complete the programme.

The Fund have received many letters of appreciation from Station Commanders; typically, "This initiative has single-handedly done more for the morale and welfare of young serving personnel and their families than anything in recent memory"
