Squadron Leader Gareth Davies (35) is a Flight Commander with 39 Squadron, part of the RAF’s Reaper UAV force based at Creech Air Force Base, Nevada. On December 6th he took on the inaugural Las Vegas Marathon, ‘a rock and roll mix of running and live entertainment’, to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund (RAFBF), the RAF’s leading welfare charity.
Gareth decided to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund due to the help his family received in his childhood. Gareth’s father, who was a Sergeant in the RAF, was killed in a car accident while on duty near RAF Bruggen in Germany, in 1985. The RAF Benevolent Fund stepped in and helped the family by providing them with a home, as well as various education costs for Gareth, who was only eleven at the time.
Gareth said:
“My aim was to complete the course in a time which didn't require a calendar! I also wanted to use the marathon as an opportunity to attempt to pay back what is in an incalculable debt to the RAFBF, as they enabled my family to regroup and build a new life for ourselves.
“I appreciate that we face harsh economic times; however, events half a world away mean that charities like the RAFBF are, unfortunately, in greater demand than ever. Please help me support what I hope you agree is a truly deserving cause.”
