For this year's annual Golf Classic event — a stalwart in our events calendar and a firm favourite for many of our supporters – we welcomed 15 teams to The Manor House Golf Club and Hotel in Castle Combe.
The night before the golf tournament, our Controller hosted an intimate supper for our sponsors, CCLA and MBDA. This supper is one of the sponsor benefits and provides an excellent opportunity for companies to invite clients along and use as a business development opportunity in an informal setting.
The golf day
On the morning of the golf day, guests arrived for registration and were provided with refreshments and hot bacon and sausage rolls, before a Shotgun Start at 1100. During the day, our staff volunteers running the day took golf buggies out around the course, taking photos of teams in action and offering water and sweet treats to fuel their game, along with Spitfire Ale generously provided by our long-term supporters, Shepherd Neame.
Drinks, dinner and prizes
Guests relaxed over a couple of pints back at the clubhouse after they completed the course, before changing into black tie ready for the drinks reception. Our guests dug deep to buy raffle tickets, which generated £2,278 in total. We secured a tremendous selection of raffle prizes this year which included a bottle of Tullibardine Bomber Command whisky, a gift hamper from Hotel Chocolat Regent Street, a £50 voucher from Iberica Restaurant Great Portland Street, two tickets for Wicked at the Apollo Theatre, London (donated by The Ambassador Theatre Group), dinner for two with wine at The Potting Shed, Dorset Square Hotel and a £50 voucher kindly donated by Experience Days – the winner was very excited about the prospect of redeeming this for an axe throwing day!
A three-course black tie dinner followed, which gave teams the opportunity to compare notes and guess who would be Golf Classic 2018 champions and go home with our beautiful Silver Shield trophy, and who would get the Wooden Spoon (a Nando's combo meal voucher for one!). The evening was rounded off by a live auction of six prizes, which included an incredible Spitfire flight (sincere thanks to our friends at Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar) and tour of Group Captain Mark Manwaring's Flight of the Navigator workshop, and a thrilling Aston Martin performance driving day at Milbrook.
The event raised a total of £28,846 to support RAF Family in need, thanks to the generosity of participants and auction and raffle prize donors.
