Target by Moonlight is the autobiography and RAF experiences of Coventry born Dennis Field. Field recalls his early life during the 1920s and 1930s which were to have a profound influence on his RAF career.
Like so many at that time, he qualified as a pilot in Canada enjoying the flying experience, lifestyle and absence of food rationing.
His original hopes to be a fighter pilot were dashed on joining Bomber Command as a skipper of Stirling bombers.
Initial training was often hazardous followed by the first operational sorties into enemy occupied Europe. He did not take part in the bombing of German cities but was selected for special operations, supplying the French Resistance.
Avoiding enemy installations by flying low level at night to locate a single drop zone in a French field were remarkable and dangerous achievements.
After the war, further adventure followed by flying Avro York passenger aircraft on some of the first regular long haul flights to the Far East.
