Up in the far north of Scotland, at the RAF's most northerly base, a few friends got together and decided that they needed to make a difference. Karen Cox tells us more.
The RAF Benevolent Fund provides so much care and support to serving, and ex-serving personnel and their families locally. So a few of us got together to set up a fundraising group at RAF Lossiemouth.
We established the group in November 2012 with the aim of fundraising solely for the RAFBF, but also to support local fundraisers in personal challenges.
Dot, from the RAFBF office in Edinburgh, helped organise a recruitment drive which brought in some enthusiastic volunteers. The volunteers were immediately put to work planning and running a Christmas Fayre on 30 November at the all ranks’ club, The Stagger Inn.
Thanks to cake baking, raffle and stall donations, £408 was raised on the day. The event was also supported by the local ASDA who donated and served teas and mince pies all afternoon.
Mrs Gillian Watson created a bespoke Christmas cake, whose snowman decoration was even wearing his RAFBF badge!
The cake was raffled off separately and raised £69.
This was followed by a Christmas quiz at The Stagger Inn. A fantastic £269 was raised on the night and the we were all very grateful to Sergeant Stuart Smylie for his time and energy and a very entertaining quiz!
This month we're hosting Laura and Rachel from the RAFBF’s regional fundraising team, to make plans for 2013.
Exciting times ahead!
