Join in Red, White and Blue Day fun and help create largest paper battleship fleet

The project to build the largest paper battleship fleet will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland.

Red White and Blue Day

The RAF Benevolent Fund, ABF the Soldiers' Charity and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity join together each year to stage Red, White and Blue Day - a fundraising and awareness day for schools and young people.

This year's event centres around the Battle of the Somme 100 commemorations and the first of those is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, the greatest naval engagement of the First World War. The paper battleship fleet will honour the 250 vessels which fought in the Battle on May 31st, 1916.

On the centenary date, the government is to hold a series of special Battle of Jutland Centenary commemorations, and schools are being invited to join the nation as part of the wider tributes.

Chris Taylor, Communications Officer at the RNRMC, said: "We’re encouraging children to be creative and make whatever boat they like; perhaps painting them in red, white and blue, by naming their ships or by writing message to those who sail in today’s Royal Navy.

"We think it’s a really fun activity and would like as many people to get involved as possible."

He added: "It is just a small way of paying tribute to the centenary of the Battle of Jutland and highlighting the pivotal role that was played by the Royal Navy."

The charities are encouraging schools to send pictures of their paper ships flotilla by email, social media or by sending them by post to be featured as part of the wider commemorations.

There will be prizes given to the schools whose pupils show the most creativity, by building the most impressive boats or flotillas. Prizes include a copy of a signed copy of Duel in the North Sea - HMS Ambuscade at Jutland, by Pat Avery, the grandson of a wireless operator who served at the Battle of Jutland.

To be featured on www.redwhiteblueday.co.uk, schools should email their photos to Red, White & Blue Day project leader Patty Wallis at: pwallis@soldierscharity.org; or, for a chance to play a part in the wider commemorations, post their best (flat packed) ships before 20th May 2016 to:
