Lives of RAF wives retold in a new book

Living in the Slipstream: Life as an RAF wifeToday sees the release of a new book called Living in the Slipstream: Life as an RAF Wife, a collection of stories told by wives of RAF personnel. The book includes a foreword from HRH The Duchess of Cambridge and 100% of the authors' profits will be shared between the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Royal Air Force Association. Alison Bairsto who is one of the editors of the book tells us more about it.

Living in the Slipstream features tales both witty and touching spanning the period from the 1950s to the present.

Chapter headings include 'Far Flung Places', 'Hostess with the Mostest', 'Five Star Living', 'Husbands and Other Animals' and 'Pomp & Circumstance'. There are anecdotes covering marching in and out, a couple of embarrassed clergy, alternative house help, incidents with royal visits and many more.

These are stories which reveal what life as an RAF wife is really like; it is eye witness reporting and first person testimony at its entertaining and informative best and is cleverly illustrated with amusing cartoons by Al Turner.

I and two other RAF wives, Jill Black and Holly Jeffers, have been working on the book for over two years, collecting stories, editing and working with our publisher, The Book Guild, who have been so helpful.

As RAF wives, we felt we had stories to tell plus this was our chance to give something back to RAF charities who do so much to support past and present RAF personnel and their families.

Hopefully we will make our RAF readers smile and remind them of happy and forgotten memories of their own lives. For those who have never encountered military life we hope they get a flavour of what life is really like as an RAF wife.

Naturally we were delighted when HRH The Duchess of Cambridge agreed to support our chosen RAF charities by writing a foreword for our book. It is a very personal piece which tells how anxious she felt when HRH The Duke of Cambridge was flying with the RAF Search and Rescue in Anglesey.

Copies of Living in the Slipstream can be purchased from the Amazon website as well as other online retailers and all good bookshops.
