RAF Marham 10K is a great success

The latest RAF Marham Flyers Running Club New Year's Eve 10K in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund, saw a record 217 runners take part.

Although there was a lot of surface water on the airfield following the previous day's record rainfall, the damp, windy conditions did nothing to put people off from entering and did nothing to dampen the general atmosphere, or the spirits as those taking part prepared to welcome in the New Year, while also seeing off some of the excesses of Christmas.

The run was led off by the Station Commander, Gp Capt Cab Townsend who led the pack at the start but was quickly overtaken by some of the elite runners from the local clubs, with Ryston Runners fielding a record number of participants, followed by Three Counties and the Bushfield Joggers, who had travelled over from Peterborough to take part.

West Norfolk AC was also well represented with their Debbie Swartz being the first lady home in a time of 43mins 38secs. Ryston Runner Nik Bensley, a regular at these events, claimed his first time win in a time of 36mins 23secs, a great result in far from ideal conditions.

A special mention must also go to veteran Ryston Runner, Viv Williamson, who celebrated her 70th Birthday while running the course, achieving another excellent time of 62mins 30secs.

Runners were also treated to an excellent goody bag at the end, which in addition to the usual chocolate bars, included a bottle of Spitfire beer, a bag of Piper Crisps and a run medal from the RAF Benevolent Fund and their supporters.

Race Director, Gary Walker, said: "Organising these events is a real pleasure for me, seeing how well supported they are by the local and regional running community and knowing we are doing something, by way of a thank you, for the RAF Benevolent Fund which does so much to support the Station."

Lisa Hunt, regional fundraiser for the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: "It's a wonderful feeling knowing that so many people battled the cold conditions to show their support for the RAF Benevolent Fund. RAF Marham has always been hugely supportive of the Fund and events like this do so much to build on the great relationship we already hold.

"The Fund was proud to spend more than £183,000 at RAF Marham last year to help support the serving personnel based there, and we look forward to continuing to help the station and the wider RAF Family throughout 2018. Thank you so much to all who took part, it makes a huge difference to the work that we do."
