A small team of dedicated fundraisers from RAF Marham won the 'Volunteer Fundraising Team of the Year' award from the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund yesterday evening.
It was just 18 months ago that RAF Photographer Flight Sergeant Graham Spark and Flight Lieutenant Sarah Ferguson started Team RAFBF Marham, but they’ve already raised more than £5,000 to support the RAF’s leading welfare charity.
Flight Sergeant Spark said: "Team RAFBF Marham is a collection of like-minded people who not only want to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund but they also want to help raise its profile on the Station.
"I think of how much the Fund spends at RAF Marham and I want more people to know about the fantastic work they do."
The RAF Benevolent Fund is committed to helping the entire spectrum of the RAF family, including serving and former personnel, partners, and children.
In 2013 the charity spent almost £250,000 to provide a range of services at RAF Marham, including a play park and youth workers for young people; relationship and financial counselling; and individual grants to 44 personnel in need totalling £188,000.
RAF Benevolent Fund Controller Air Marshal Chris Nickols thanked the team for their ongoing efforts: "The RAF Benevolent Fund relies on the efforts of its many supporters and we can't thank Team RAFBF Marham enough for their enthusiasm and support. Their bucket collections, cake sales, and events not only provide much needed funds, but also raise the profile of the Fund so that personnel know that we are here when they need us."
Flight Sergeant Spark said: "I don’t think people are always aware about the breadth of support the Fund provides. I've just recently come back from Afghanistan and it’s nice to know that the Fund is there if I need them."
The award was sponsored by Lockheed Martin UK and presented by Stephen Ball, Chief Executive, Lockheed Martin UK.
This is the second year that the RAF Benevolent Fund has recognised the outstanding contributions made by a few of the dedicated individuals, stations, and corporate partners who support the charity each year.
The awards ceremony was held at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London.
