Remembering Caroline McGougan

Former RAF Benevolent Fund champion, Caroline McGougan, passed away on 2 February 2017 following a brief battle with cancer. In this blog, Team RAFBF Lossiemouth Chair, Karen Cox, and Secretary, Mel Waters, remember Caroline and the impact she made at RAF Lossiemouth.

"Caroline was a fervent supporter of the RAF Benevolent Fund and took on the role of RAF Lossiemouth's RAFBF Champion in 2012.  I was fundraising for our local Airplay project and when she asked me to help with the local collection cans, I was more than happy to help.

"The chance of a lifetime came along and Caroline left the RAF to move back to her home town in Tain, so the Edinburgh office asked me if I would take over the role of Champion. I said I would be happy to, as long as I could bring a team, and from that point Team RAFBF Lossiemouth was born.

"Since then, we have raised over £57k and I feel so much of what we have achieved is down to Caroline's nudging. She was an incredible woman; she was always laughing and had a big heart. I am going to miss her sense of humour and kindness."

Team RAFBF Lossiemouth Secretary, Mel Waters, worked with Caroline at RAF Lossiemouth where they were close friends. When Mel left the RAF, she knew she wanted to give something back and having heard about Team 'Lossie' through Caroline, she got in touch.

Mel says, "Caroline was a wonderful friend to me while we worked together and beyond, I will miss her dearly as will my two sons, Scott, Rhys. It was thanks to Caroline that I got involved in fundraising for the RAF Benevolent Fund and, knowing how much the charity meant to her, I will continue to do what I can in her honour."

Caroline's funeral was held on 10 February at Inverness Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, donations were made to a Virgin Money Giving page set up in her honour, raising money for both the RAF Benevolent Fund and Cancer Research UK. Over £2500 has been raised so far.
