Last week Royal Ascot organisers held a special Armed Forces Day to recognise the work of those who serve in Her Majesty's Armed Forces and to also raise money for the Forces' three national charities. Paul Hewson, our regional director, was there to soak up the atmosphere.
On Friday 21 June Royal Ascot held their first ever Armed Forces Day. It was a lovely occasion with representatives from the RAF, the Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines collecting for their charities – RAF Benevolent Fund, ABF The Soldiers' Charity and The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity.
Personnel from various RAF stations kindly gave up a day's leave to attend and support us on the day.
Some were stewards who greeted racegoers at the entrances and others manned exit points to collect money on our behalf.
The money from the collection is still being counted but it's hoped that the three charities will each receive a sizeable cheque from the proceeds so generously donated by the public.
It was a pleasure and a privilege for the RAF Benevolent Fund to be involved alongside our sister charities and to witness the tremendous support from the public.
The day culminated in a sing-along to music played by the Band of the Welsh Guards – a joyous end to a very enjoyable day.
