RAF veteran, 91, walks 1,200 miles for Fund

RAF veteran Joe Wallace has completed a year-long walk covering the virtual distance from John O'Groats to Land's End to celebrate his 90th birthday and raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Joe Wallace, who turned 91 this July, completed his mission covering over 1,200 miles and raising thousands of pounds for his five chosen charities including the Fund.

Joe said: “It feels great to know that I completed ‘Joe90’s Mission Impossible’ in less than the allotted time I set myself. The mileage from John O’Groats to Land’s End is 874 miles and this was clocked up by 1 April. The actual miles walked in the year was over 1,200.

“The biggest challenge was the last three miles walking along the rocky coastline into Land’s End – although it was comforting to have my grandson visiting from Australia who helped me over some steep slopes.”

Joe added: “There were many highlights, but what stood out was the launch attended by our local MP, Ian Sollom, our local Mayor, Town Crier, local Rotary members and family members. Ian Sollom also presented me with a certificate in Westminster Hall, adjacent to the Houses of Parliament and arranged a guided tour.”

Joe walked 10,000 steps each day around his hometown of St Neots, Cambridgeshire, living up to his motto that ‘you are never too old to do anything’.
