RAF serviceman supports Fund with Oder-Neisse fundraising challenge

Published:

Throughout June and July, Corporal John Cross is walking the 467km distance of the Oder-Neisse line on the border of Germany and Poland to mark Victory in Europe (VE) Day 80 and raise money for the Fund.

John, 36, is an Aircraft Mechanical Engineer based at RAF Marham and has been serving for 16 years.

John said: “This year marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, and I’m taking on the challenge of walking the distance of the Oder–Neisse line virtually. This line, drawn after the Second World War, marked the shifting borders in Europe, between Germany and Poland, and is a symbol of the post-war landscape and the sacrifices made for peace.

“By walking this route, I’m not only honouring history, but also paying tribute to those who fought, especially the RAF personnel who played a crucial role in securing victory. John continued: “The money I aim to raise will go towards helping current and former RAF members who need practical, financial or emotional support from the Fund, who are there for them long after their service. This is my way of making sure their sacrifices are remembered and that they receive the support they truly deserve.”

John was invited to the RAF Benevolent Fund’s annual Awards in London this year. He said: “I was introduced to many people who have been helped by the Fund – hearing their stories, seeing all the hard work that has been put in and how much of a difference the Fund makes was just incredible. Many stated that the Fund has made life changing improvements both physically and mentally and it inspired me to do more. I want to raise money but also raise awareness of how incredible the RAF Benevolent Fund is.”

John added: “My family and I received a lot of support back in 2016. My son was very poorly and had to spend two weeks in Addenbrookes hospital. The Fund helped with food and accommodation costs over that time which we were grateful for.

“This is my second fundraising challenge, and I hope to inspire others to get involved – it is so hugely rewarding!"
