Waddington Airplay group members have been determined not to let COVID-19 restrictions affect their meetings. They've got creative and gone digital to enable the youngsters to continue receiving support, giving them a place to let off steam. In this guest blog, they tell us about the fun they've been having…
Over the last month at Airplay Waddington, we have been unable to meet at the building we normally would, due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this hasn't stopped us seeing each other! The young people at RAF Waddington have been meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams with their youth workers and friends. These have featured some mega fun games of Pictionary, video game quizzes and lots of laughs! We are looking forward to continuing these into December.
T.A. said: "We've been doing quizzes, animal games and Pictionary, they have been totally fun."
E.R. described the digital sessions as 'too good to describe!'.
Before the second lockdown, the Airplay team have also been out at the park, where we have met lots of Airplay members, and a lot of new faces. During these sessions we have been playing some socially distant games, and the young people have had a chance to see each other and to make new friends.
When we started out, over half the young people hadn't tried jump rope before, but after six weeks of practice, everyone can now do at least 10 jumps over the rope! Everyone has also had a go at learning some circus skills, including the spinning plates, which were a fun challenge for everyone, and very popular! When we were at the park, O.S. said: "I really enjoyed the obstacle courses."
The obstacle courses were a set of challenges around the park, that young people did against the clock. The young people were all very competitive, and eager to beat each other's quickest times!
T.A. who had not met the Airplay team before, started out saying: "I don't want to go!" He has had so much fun at the park, meeting other young people and making new friends, that he is now a member of the youth club, and comes to our digital sessions each week, he even booked onto our half term activities.
