RAF Benevolent Fund supporter Karen Bremner recently organised a Family Fun Day in Saudi Arabia to celebrate the 70th anniversary of VE Day. Karen tells us how the day went.
We are part of MODSAP based in Salwa Garden Village in Riyadh. MODSAP is a mix of RAF, MOD civilians with a couple of Navy thrown in for good luck!
We are a small but a very active community. We decided we had to celebrate the anniversary of VE Day and as a former member of the RAF I know all about the wonderful work that the RAF Benevolent Fund does.
A small group of us worked on the event and we decided that an old-fashioned street party would work best. But with temperatures reaching 45 degrees in May, we decided holding the event under cover would be better.
But who knew the cover would end up being used to protect us from the rain rather than the blazing sunshine?
We had typical British weather for the event. Yes, it rained in the desert in May! This is unheard of and I like to think it rained just for us!
The event was a fabulous day with plenty of food, face-painting, tug-of-war and a raffle. Being so far away from the UK sometimes means we forget our RAF roots so it is always lovely to raise money for people we know benefit so much from the RAF Benevolent Fund's work.
We hope to hold an event in September and host a Great British Sunday Lunch, although it may have to be on a Saturday as our weekend here is Friday to Saturday!
