At the RAF Benevolent Fund, we are helping older people to access peer support and friendship through our telephone friendship groups in partnership with The Silver Line.
The service helps RAF veterans and wider RAF family members connect over the phone once a week, at a set time, all from the comfort of their home.
Up to six people can take part in the chats which are facilitated by trained volunteers. Topics of conversations can range from TV shows and daily life to current affairs and interests.
Each group is different so when you first join we will help you find a group that is right for you.

Check & Chat Calls – COVID 19
The requirements to stay at home during the COVID-19 pandemic are reducing opportunities for social interaction with friends and family. This can lead to increasing feelings of loneliness.
In recognition of this, we have redeployed our Engagement Workers to undertake weekly 'Check & Chat' social calls to any member of the RAF Family who would appreciate one. These calls take place once per week and last approximately 30 minutes. If you would like to receive a weekly 'Check & Chat' call please use our Request our Help function and we will contact you.
Testimonials from service users
"It's a nice group. We have become friends. It's enjoyable and quite satisfying to hear about what other people are doing. Yesterday we spoke about getting married and how it has changed over the years."
"It's lovely, I like it; I enjoy it. We have lovely little chats. I don't really get anyone visiting me at home. It's nice being in touch."
"I have joined every Monday evening since it started. Now I look forward to the phone ringing at 7pm. I live in a block of flats, and when you live by yourself you do get lonely."
