Sgt Andrew Merrett, 49, who is based at RAF Waddington, in Lincolnshire, is raising funds ahead of the event on 2 October.

Last year Andrew was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) and he is hoping to beat the world record for running a marathon with the condition.

He has served in the RAF for more than 32 years, after joining up as a 16-year-old.

He said: "The London Marathon has always been on my bucket list and this year maybe my last chance physically to complete the distance.

"As my future will probably involve help from the RAF Benevolent Fund, with house adaptions when I leave the RAF, I decided to help raise much needed funds."

Andrew's wife and son will be travelling down to London to support him.

He added: "I am most looking forward to the crowds of supporters and the atmosphere."
