Fundraising RAF Family

For nearly two decades, Steve has poured his time, skill, and passion into a remarkable tribute to the RAF and, in the process, has raised money and awareness for the Fund.

It all began in 2006, when Steve started building what would become ‘The Odiham Spitfire’ – an 80% scale replica of a Photo Reconnaissance Mk PRXI aircraft that flew with No. 4 Squadron, based at RAF Odiham during the summer of 1944. Steve said: "After eleven years’ work, in September 2017, it was completed – or so I thought!"

He recalled: "Various problems took the next five years to sort out, but it finally gained its Permit to Fly in September 2022."

The finished aircraft has earned prestigious recognition, including the UK’s Best Kit Built Aircraft award in 2022 and an International FAI award the following year for its outstanding quality of build.

Steve’s link to the Fund began early in the project, when a neighbour introduced him to Air Commodore Mike Barter, then a Director of the Fund. After showing him the Spitfire, an idea arose – all visitors to his workshop would be invited to make a donation to the Fund. Over the years, this simple yet unique concept has grown into a dedicated fundraising effort.

One of Steve’s most memorable moments was at the RAF Odiham 100-year anniversary celebrations in June 2025, where his Spitfire was on display for visitors. Other memorable events include Steve’s 1940s-themed launch of the Spitfire held at his farm, Families Days held at RAF Stations across the country, and attending the RAF Benevolent Fund Awards ceremony, which he said was a "great opportunity to see the incredible work of the Fund and other fundraisers."

For Steve, supporting the Fund is hugely important. He said: "Without the RAF’s success and sacrifices in the forties, the quality of life for my immediately post-war generation would have been far worse. I’ve been able to enjoy a rewarding career and, most importantly, the freedom of the skies."

Looking ahead, Steve hopes ‘The Odiham Spitfire’ will continue to serve as a symbol of remembrance, inspiration, and generosity – raising funds and awareness for the RAF Benevolent Fund wherever it flies.
