Op PITTING documentary – where to find support

RAF Family Afghanistan

In August 2021, one of the largest British military undertakings took place during the evacuation of Kabul Airport after the Taliban seized power across Afghanistan. It was an incredibly complex and dangerous operation performed by the Armed Forces, including RAF personnel, whereby 15,000 British nationals and eligible Afghans were flown out in a matter of days.

From 2-4 July 2023, Channel 4 will air a three part documentary called ‘Evacuation’, covering Operation PITTING through the eyes of the Armed Forces Community who were on the ground supporting the evacuation. The documentary provides a unique insight into a devastating situation, highlighting the impact and the emotional toll of the events for all involved.

RAF Police Squadron Leader Diana Bird is featured in the documentary and said that, after terrified Afghans breached the fences of Kabul International Airport, she feared for her safety. She revealed: "The runway has people all over it, so nothing can take off or land that is big. The Taliban are surrounding the airport, so we aren't driving out. There is nowhere to go, the country has fallen. I really thought, I may not be going home. This may have been a trip too far. You absolutely feel for each and every one of these people. But we couldn't save everybody."

At the RAF Benevolent Fund, we understand that this programme may spark difficult memories for the RAF Family who were there or were part of this or similar operations.
