RAF personnel get revved up at Silverstone

Five servicemen from Tactical Medical Wing Logistics Supply travelled as far as the Formula 1 cars speeding round the track this weekend – only on spinning bikes.

The spinathon, held during the British Grand Prix, involved the fundraisers cycling 306km per day, equivalent to 52 laps of the track, and in doing so raised almost £1,300 for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Corporal Rob Thomson, who organised the event, said: "I have been planning this event for a couple of years and I am thrilled that I was able to make it happen during the RAF Benevolent Fund’s centenary year. They are a fantastic organisation who do so much for the RAF Family.

"The lads in the team have done themselves proud by covering such a great distance and for suffering through the incredible pain that a spinning bike saddle is capable of inflicting.

"I am overwhelmed with the level of support people showed us over the weekend and grateful to Silverstone event staff for their support and hospitality. On behalf of the Tactical Medical Wing Logistics Supply, thank you."

The team smashed their target, with each member completing a total of four hours spinning over both days, achieving a total distance of 618.8km.

Now in its 100th year, the RAF Benevolent Fund receives no Government funding, and, as such, relies on the generosity of its supporters and fundraisers.
