What's new RAF Family

To mark Volunteers’ Week (2-8 June), we spoke to RAF Benevolent Fund volunteer Sue Powell about her support for our community veterans’ groups, and her personal decision to give back to the Fund.

What is your connection to the RAF?

My dad served in the RAF and I’ve many friends over the years who have served too. I was a Nursing Officer in the British Army for two years, but the RAF has always been very close to my heart.

Why did you decide to volunteer for the Fund?

I met Fund Community Engagement Worker Nicky Russell at a veterans’ group. When I was poorly a couple of years ago, she supported me, getting me involved in the groups which helped me to come out of my shell and overcome my anxieties. My goal was to one day become a volunteer to give back to the Fund for the support I received.

What does your voluntary role with the Fund involve?

I now support Nicky by attending three veterans’ groups in the Suffolk area. I spend time sitting talking to people, making new people feel welcome, helping veterans with limited mobility – pushing a wheelchair, or making teas and coffees. I think my nursing background helps me with this; the ability to care and talk to people and generally assist with whatever is needed.

What are some of the activities that you have been involved in?

We hold a Dementia Reminiscence Group in Newmarket and to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day this year, we had a bit of a party in the theme of a 1940s street party. We had bunting decorations, 40s music and a buffet – the atmosphere was so lovely, and I think everybody enjoyed themselves!

Last year, I was asked to give a brief talk about my role at the Fund as part of a presentation to the Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers group, who support us with RAF coloured knitted scarves for veterans. I thoroughly enjoyed that, as it was something I used to do in my job, and it feels lovely to represent the Fund.

What has been a highlight of your time in this role?

I think it’s just that each of the groups brings something different. At Beccles, we held a Christmas raffle where everybody got a prize, which was fun. We also have a ‘birthday book’ for the people at our group to remember everyone’s birthday; we’ll have a cake and candles and make it a little bit special for them.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering for the Fund?

Do it! Not only are you hopefully giving something to the members of the RAF Family and support to the Fund team, but you also get the pride of wearing the Fund uniform. The support from all the staff at the Fund is absolutely brilliant and so welcoming.
