On Sunday 17 August, a team of four serving RAF personnel took part in a six-hour skateboarding challenge to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.
The challenge involved the team skateboarding over a long distance whilst spending six hours consistently on their skateboards.
Corporal Dom Brown, 31, is a Logistics MT Driver at RAF Benson. He said: "The course consisted of steep terrain which was extremely tough to ride up. The heat was around 26 degrees so determination to keep riding was a little unsettling, but we pushed through with plenty of hydration and nutrition. I really enjoyed chatting and getting to know the riders, some who I had met previously at other events.
“We trained for the event by skating around local cycle paths in Reading and Didcot. On the day, everyone was really motivated, had their kit prepped and ready and towards the end, everyone upped their game to achieve the maximum mileage.”
Dom continued: “We chose to support the RAF Benevolent Fund because of what they give back to RAF personnel, whether it be adaptions for families who have disabilities, social getaways or counselling. I think it’s really important we give something back to personnel who may need that support.
Collectively the team achieved 218 miles in six hours. The team also raised money for Severn Hospice.
Dom is part of the official RAF Skateboarding team and said: “This event has been great exposure for promoting and recognising skateboarding as an official RAF sport.”
The team have raised over £700 so far. You can donate to their fundraiser on JustGiving.
