RAF Wittering serviceman takes on Manchester Marathon to support the RAF Family

Published:

On Sunday 19 April, RAF Wittering serviceman Caylum van Empel ran the Manchester Marathon to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

AS1 Caylum van Empel, 27, from Gloucester, is a Logistics Supplier at RAF Wittering serving within the Squadron 1 Expeditionary Logistics Squadron within the section fuels support team.

Caylum, who has been serving for over seven years, said: “I chose to run for the RAF Benevolent Fund because it’s a charity that means something personal to me. Having previously supported them, I’ve seen the positive impact they have on the lives of serving personnel, veterans, and their families. It makes me proud to be able to do this challenge for a cause that looks after our own – providing support when it’s needed most.

“Running the marathon was my way of giving back and showing appreciation for the community I’m proud to be part of.”

Caylum added: “I wanted to take on a personal challenge as a focus for my mental wellbeing. Training and taking part in the run gave me a real sense of purpose, resilience, and clarity.”

Caylum’s mum and nan joined him at the start line, giving him the encouragement he needed. He said: “There’s something special about that shared energy, especially knowing I’m running for the Fund. Crossing the finish line was a big moment for me too, not just for the achievement, but for what it represents in terms of the effort, support, and purpose behind it.”
