Fund transforms children’s facilities at RAF Ascension Island Air Terminal

Published:

The children’s facilities at RAF Ascension Island Air Terminal have had a much-needed upgrade, thanks to a generous grant from Fund.

The funding, provided through the Fund’s Station Grants Programme, was used to enhance the terminal’s family-friendly facilities, enhancing the experience for families transiting along the South Atlantic Air Bridge.

The grant was used to purchase and replace essential items including travel cots, highchairs, and a range of toys for children of all ages. These upgrades were driven by feedback and a growing awareness that existing provisions were falling short, particularly during longer holding times and unexpected aircraft delays.

RAF Ascension Island plays a vital role in supporting personnel and their loved ones as they travel between the UK and the Falkland Islands. With families often spending extended hours in the air terminal due to the nature of flight handling and potential delays, creating a safe, comfortable, and engaging space for children became a clear priority.

A spokesperson from RAF Ascension Island said: "This project is a shining example of how targeted support and small changes can lead to meaningful outcomes. It’s a testament to the RAF Benevolent Fund’s mission to support the RAF Family, wherever they are in the world – even in the remote South Atlantic.

"As families continue to pass through the island, they can now do so with the reassurance that their needs are better supported – thanks to a shared commitment to care, comfort, and community."
