RAF veterans and supporters take on Somme Poppy Run challenge

Published:

Last month, a team of RAF veterans and park runners completed the Somme Poppy Run to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The park runners, known as ‘The Globe Trotters,’ get together weekly as members of the King’s Lynn parkrun.
RAF veteran Flight Lieutenant Gary Walker organised the challenge, which took place on 12 July and involved running along what was the front line during the Battle of the Somme in France, during the First World War.

Gary said: "The annual Somme Poppy Run first took place in 2013, taking members of my local running group in Kings Lynn over to France to run the front line of the Battle of the Somme.

“We had very hot conditions this year and so extra precautions were taken to ensure everyone remained hydrated, but all who took part completed the distance. This run has always been popular, and we’re excited to say there is already a waiting list for the next event in July 2026!

“The Fund is a charity close to my heart after serving at RAF Marham and working in a community support role. It feels appropriate to give back to the Fund through the monies raised from this event.”

The run finished with a wreath laying at the Thiepval Memorial in memory of the missing.

Gary was awarded the Special Recognition Award at the RAF Benevolent Fund Awards in April, for his efforts raising thousands of pounds to help the RAF Family since 2013.
