Remembering Veronica Young

Remembrance RAF Family

It is with the greatest sadness that the RAF Benevolent Fund announces the passing of one of our colleagues and friends, Veronica Young.

Veronica, known to many as Vron, sadly lost her battle to cancer on 5 June 2023 and passed away with her family by her side.

Veronica, 59, from Mosstodloch Scotland, was a much-loved member of the Fund’s Community Welfare team, providing specialist caseworker support to members of the RAF Family across the East of Scotland. Veronica joined the Fund in 2019 as a Social Engagement Worker at Lossiemouth and more recently became one of the Funds new Welfare Support Executives.

Veronica had previously worked at Leuchars and Lossiemouth in the HIVE for over a decade, volunteering as a caseworker for SSAFA, a Connections for Life volunteer at RAFA, a Telephone Friendship Group facilitator, and as a fundraiser and supporter of many military charities across Scotland.

In a sign of Veronica's selflessness and determination, she even took time to raise money for the Fund whilst undergoing treatment for her breast cancer in 2022, dressing up as a superhero and undertaking many challenges throughout her chemotherapy.

It was Veronica's selflessness that earned her in 2009 a British Empire Medal for 'exceptional service both professional and voluntary to the RAF Leuchars service community', something for which she was so rightly proud. Her service, selflessness and compassion will be her legacy.

Air Vice-Marshal Chris Elliot, Controller at the Fund said: "This is desperately sad news, and it is difficult to find the right words at this moment, but in Veronica, we have lost a fantastic, passionate, and committed servant of the Fund, a colleague, and a loyal and generous friend to many.

"We extend our sincere condolences to Vron's family, her colleagues in the Welfare Directorate, and her friends. They are all in our thoughts and Vron's presence will be remembered for many years to come. A life so beautifully lived, deserves to be remembered."
