RAF Wittering personnel at new outdoor hub

How the Fund supported improvements to Station facilities at RAF Wittering

We take a look at how our Station Grants programme has supported investment in facilities at RAF Wittering and enhanced the wellbeing of serving personnel and their families on Station.

Over the past few years, more than £153,000 has been provided by the Fund to upgrade various facilities on Station at RAF Wittering. These improvements go beyond basic amenities and focus on creating spaces to improve personal wellbeing and service life.

Working alongside other service charities, the Fund has helped to modernise RAF Wittering’s facilities, moving away from outdated designs to more functional and welcoming spaces. One example of this is the transformation of the Aviator Restaurant lounge. What was once a basic dining area, has been updated to include a relaxation zone with comfortable seating, modern amenities, and an environment that encourages social interaction.

Another key project supported by the Fund is the renovation of the Community Centre. The upgrades include a new kitchen, updated furniture, an outdoor barbecue area, and recreational facilities. These changes provide more opportunities for personnel and their families to gather and socialise, fostering stronger community connections.

The Station Allotments project, initially launched in response to increased isolation during the pandemic, has since developed into a community space where personnel, their families, and local groups can engage in gardening and social activities. This initiative has contributed to building stronger relationships within the community.

The Fund has also supported the creation of a Wellness Garden at RAF Wittering. This outdoor space, designed with mental health in mind, provides personnel with a quiet area for relaxation and reflection, contributing to overall wellbeing.

The Fund supported the renovation of RAF Wittering’s Golden Lion pub in partnership with the Nuffield Trust, which now serves as a community hub for events from family functions to Station Oktoberfest celebrations, and regular quiz nights.

Flying Officer Mike Collis, who regularly uses the facility with his family, said: “Since its makeover, the Golden Lion has really developed an atmosphere of ‘the local’. Before this, it had a generic feel of another MOD space. We regularly go to watch football or take part in the quiz led by the Junior Ranks Committee. It is a great place to go, and it is great to see it being enjoyed by such a diverse range of people from across the whole Force.

Mike continued: “For a while Wittering seemed to be missing a social hub and that has now returned, and with it a sense of community.”

Each of the projects has been managed and delivered by Station personnel, ensuring the improvements meet the needs of the community and are sustainable over time. This approach helps build ownership and pride in the facilities, ensuring their continued benefit.

Station Commander Wing Commander Nikki Duncan said: “The RAF Benevolent Fund’s approach at RAF Wittering represents a shift from reactive support – helping personnel after problems arise – to proactive investment in environments that prevent problems from developing. By funding facilities that promote social connection, mental wellbeing, and community engagement, the Fund is addressing root causes rather than just symptoms.”
